WCCCD’s ISP Hosts School Integration Timeline Project
Posted On March 9, 2025
Wayne County Community College District’s Institute for Social Progress is proud to host an important new academic project focusing on the history of integration in Detroit public schools. The project, a detailed interactive timeline of integration in Detroit schools, was developed from intensive research on integration conducted by University of Michigan Law Professor Michelle Adams and her students Michelle Landry (2024) and Victori Pedri that is outlined in Adams’ recent book, The Containment: Detroit, the Supreme Court, and the Battle for Racial Justice in the North. The Containment examines the impacts of the U.S. Supreme Court’s historic 1974 Milliken v. Bradley decision that severely limited integration in Detroit and in public schools throughout the nation. The interactive timeline begins with the year 1839 and goes to the present day. The timeline will be updated on an ongoing basis.
