Dr. Michael Eric Dyson , nationally renowned American intellectual, author and radio host will speak at the Wayne County Community College District Downtown Campus at 10 a.m. Friday, October 24. The Downtown Campus is located at 1001 West Fort Street in Detroit.

The program is open to the public at no cost and is presented as part of the District’s Global Conversation Speaker Series in conjunction with the WCCCD School of Continuing Education and its Institute for Social Progress.

                Dr. Dyson was named by Essence magazine as one of the 40 most inspiring African Americans. He is one of the nation’s most renowned and popular public intellectuals. Dr. Dyson, a professor of Theology, English and African American Studies at Georgetown University, hosts the nationally syndicated radio show, The Michael Eric Dyson Show, which addresses social, cultural and political issues in a contemporary vein.

                “We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Dyson to WCCCD and back to Detroit,” said WCCCD Chancellor Dr. Curtis L. Ivery. “Dr. Dyson has long been a champion of exercising the might of our minds to create better lives for individuals, families and entire communities.

                “We work every day to help provide better lives to our students through higher education, and Dr. Dyson’s path to achievement, his rigorous intellectual life and his commitment to engaging ideas and issues that affect our day-to-day lives is a testament to just where higher education can lead you,” Ivery said.

                His famous rise from a young father with financial challenges to Princeton Ph.D., from church pastor to college professor and from a factory worker who started college at 21 to a public intellectual has informed his commentary on some of the toughest issues of our day.

                Dr. Dyson is the author of sixteen books; including his most recent book Know What I Mean? : Reflections on Hip Hop and April 4, 1968: Martin Luther King’s Death and How it Changed America. Dr. Dyson has taught at some of the nation’s most prestigious universities, including Brown University, UNC at Chapel Hill and Columbia, and frequently appears on The Today Show, Nightline, O’Reilly Factor, The Tavis Smiley Show and Real Time with Bill Maher.
